1-day Itinerary in Lamego: Wines, History and Flavors

If you’re looking for a charming destination in the heart of the Douro, Lamego is the perfect choice. Rich in history, tradition and stunning landscapes, this city is also home to Quinta dos Poços, where we produce wines in small quantities with the utmost quality and dedication.

In this one-day itinerary, we guide you through an authentic experience: from the morning spent among vineyards and wine tastings, to the discovery of historical monuments and unforgettable regional flavors.

Morning: Visit Quinta dos Poços – Wines with a Douro Soul

Start your day with a unique oenological experience at Quinta dos Poços, located in the heart of Lamego. Our quinta is a family-run project dedicated to producing high-quality wines in limited quantities – each bottle tells a story and reflects the care taken with the land and tradition.

What to expect of your visit:

The visit begins with an explanation of the history of the estate, the philosophy of artisanal production and the connection with the Douro terroir. You can then stroll through the vineyards and visit the winery, where our wines come to life.

You also have the opportunity to have lunch on our farm, where you can eat typical Portuguese cooking over an open fire.

Wine tasting:

When you come to our quinta, you just have to pre-order the wines you want to taste. However, we recommend tasting our table wines.

Taste Choice

Included in this pack is White Wine Colheita, White Wine Reserva, Rosé Wine, Red Wine Colheita, Red Wine Reserva and Red Wine Big Reserve. Each of these wines has a different flavor and history, so don’t miss out.

Tip: bring comfortable shoes and enjoy taking photos with the incredible landscape as a backdrop.

Lunch: Regional Flavors at Presunteca

After the walk, there’s nothing better than a well-deserved break to taste the region’s products. Our suggestion is the unmissable Presunteca, a modern and welcoming space dedicated to Lamego’s traditional sausages, ham and cheeses.

Here, the star is the cured ham – sliced by hand, served with homemade bread, mountain cheese and local olive oil.

Local tip: ask for pairing recommendations with Quinta dos Poços wines – our Reserva reds go wonderfully with cured ham.

Afternoon: Culture and Devotion in Lamego

After lunch, there’s nothing better than a stroll through the city to discover the historical soul of Lamego.

The Monumental Staircase of Lamego

Your visit to the city begins at the Escadaria de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, one of Portugal’s most impressive postcards. There are 686 steps stretching up the hill, interspersed with fountains, sculptures and typical blue tiles, creating a unique visual and spiritual experience.

Climbing this staircase is more than a physical challenge – it’s a journey through time and the city’s devotion to its patron saint. For those who prefer a more leisurely stroll, you can also drive up to the top.

Sanctuary of Our Lady of Remedies

At the top of the staircase is the beautiful Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, built between the 18th and 20th centuries. The Baroque-style building, with its imposing towers and rich decoration, offers not only a spiritual visit, but also a panoramic view over Lamego and the Douro valley that is worth every step.

Take a moment to enter the church and appreciate the frescoes, the gilded altarpieces and the serene energy of the space.

Historic center of Lamego

If you still have energy, end your afternoon exploring the historic center. Pass by the Sé of Lamego, one of the oldest cathedrals in Portugal, with Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance elements.

Wander the quiet streets, discover small stores selling regional products and take the opportunity to buy a souvenir – a bottle of wine, a homemade jam or local handicrafts.

Late Afternoon: Enjoy the View

Before heading back, sit down at a terrace in the city centre. It’s the perfect time to enjoy the end of the day and reflect on the peaceful and authentic beauty of Lamego.
